Many artists found themselves estranged from their cultures as war erupted around them. ■ B) Many were upset about the rationale behind the war. In 1916, a group of artists congregated to express disapproval of the war and rejection of society at large. These, they believed, led to war. ● A) They felt that the reason and logic of society had become its downfall. Therefore, their art rejected the reason and logic that Dadaists perceived was an intergral part of traditional art. ● B) In fact, many Dadaists called their movement the “anti-art.” Some even refused to call Dada an art movement at all. ● C) Dadaists often used their art to call Dada an art movement at all. ● C) Dadaists often used their art to attempt to offend the sensibilities of the American ART News called the movement “the sickest, most paralyzing, and most destructive thing that has ever originated from the brain of man.” Dadaists certainly had the effect that they intended. ● D)
◆ A) The war itself, not just the cultures that led to it, was also a focus of the scorn of Dadaists. ◆ B) Since the purpose of the original congregation of those that formed Dana was to censure the war, Dada artists never lost sight of that purpose. ◆ C) Through their anti-art, Dadaists attempted to strengthen their voice in rejecting the war and their society’s support of it. They believed that their art, which challenged artistic conventions, would consequently cause others to challenge societal and political conventions. ◆ D) while Dada art may not have had a tangible effect upon the public’s perception of the war, its long-term effects can be seen in Surrealism, which many vies as an evolution of Dada.
