The political turmoil of World War I in Europe had many effects upon global culture. Perhaps the most surprising was the Dada art movement. ■ A) Dadaism was born in natural Zurich, Switzerland, during a meeting of artists from various countries. Many artists found themselves estranged from their cultures as war erupted around them. ■ B) Many were upset about the rationale behind the war. In 1916, a group of artists congregated to express disapproval of the war and rejection of society at large. This included its social and artistic traditions. ■ C) As stated in the Dada manifesto of 1918, Dada art rejected both the popular artistic traditions of the era and society’s participation in World War l. ■ D)
The only real point of the Dada movement was to disturb the apathy of the masses, as the artists observed it. Dadaists felt that rejecting the traditional conceptions of art was the most effective way to show their protest of modern society’s priorities. These, they believed, led to war. ● A) They felt that the reason and logic of society had become its downfall.
