The Risk of Genetically Modified Organisms

GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, are living beings whose genetic structures have been changed by scientists. In the case of food crops, increased resistance to disease and overall improved crop yields are stated as reasons for the creation of GMOs. Many of these same scientists, however, cite several drawback to the widespread use of GMOs.

In order to make GMOs resistant to disease, scientists introduce the games of certain diseases into the genetic structures of plants. Many of the same scientists doing this work suggested that the end result-the genetically modified plants-could contain enough of the toxic DNA to affect animals that eat the crops. A recent study by Cornell University in the United States proved these fears correct. In field studies, Cornell showed that the GMOs were indeed deadly to monarch butterflies when ingested.

In nature, different plant species can interbreed with each other, which creates an entirely new species. This presents another concern regarding the widespread use of GMOs. Scientists worry that genetically modified crops might interbreed with naturally occurring weeds. This would produce “super weeds”-unwanted plants that are entirely resistant to herbicides. Again, scientists’ concerns have proved to be well-founded. New crop strains, inedible to humans and resistant to all known herbicides, have appeared in Canda as a result of such interbreeding.
