Immigration and Urban Growth

In the latter part of the 19th century, America’s urban areas experienced a population explosion. Immigrants arrived from around the world, fueling a period of intense growth in American cities. In particular, immigrants settled in urban areas, where there were plenty of job opportunities for unskilled laborers.

The immigrant population in American cities was so high that by 2890, eighty-seven percent of Chicago residents were immigrants. Also, New York City had more Irish inhabitants than Dublin in Ireland. However, once they reached America, immigrants often found themselves facing language barriers and homesickness. As a result, ethnic communities formed within citied to help ease the adjustment to urban American life. These close-knit communities offered newcomers familiarity and cohesion.

Immigrants were known to have a strong work ethic and often had no trouble finding jobs in major metropolitan areas. This caused some native-born Americans to blame the immigrants for “stealing” their jobs. They were angry that immigrants were willing to accept lower wages and to continue working during factory strikes. There were some who advocated nativism. However, proponents of immigration argued, rightly so, that without immigration, America’s urban areas and industrial growth would have been much slower or even impossible.
