We have recently witnessed a dramatic shift in the image and mission of museums. For over a century, these institutions presented themselves as elitist temples of art.

Even the architecture of museum buildings recalled, more often than not, the sacred shrines of Greco-Roman antiquity. Now, however, museums have developed block-buster shows for the masses, and they have put vigorous efforts into merchandising , as the size of the typical museums have now adopted an educational mission, reaching out to young audiences whom the museums, quite sensibly, view as the patrons of the future.
