I am a shameless word maniac. You can imagine, then, my excitement when a friend told me about the "Word a Day" website in the Internet. This wonderful site presents an unusual word every day, along with a definition and a word history.

The researchers who write the material often feature a weekly theme. Last week, for example, the site featured such choice items as octothorpe (the eight-pointed pound sign on your telephone keyboard), ennead (a group of nine), and doyenne (the senior woman of a group, derived from the Latin word for "ten").
