Mathemathics Section: Multiple choice question

10, 18, 4, 15, 3, 21, x

If x is the median of the 7 numbers listed above, which of the following could be the value of x?

(A) 5

(B) 8

(C) 9

(D) 14

(E) 16

<Terms>

1) average – The numerical result of dividing the sum of two or more quantities by the number of quantities.

2) mean – The average of a number of items in a group (total the items and divide by the number of items).

3) median – The middle item in an ordered group. If the group has an even number of items, the median is the average of the two middle terms.

4) mode – A type of average; the number (or numbers) that occurs most frequently in a set of data.

Answer & Explanation: Choice (D) is correct.

If x is the median of the 7 numbers listed, then x must be the middle number when these numbers are listed in order from least to greatest: 3, 4, 10, x, 15, 18, 21. Thus, x must be at least 10 and no greater than 15. Therefore, of the given choices, only 14 could be the value of x.
