Folklorists have found that holidays and holiday customs often bear interesting traces of their origins. For example, the beginning of the European April Fool's Day is linked to the replacement of the Julian calendar by the Gregorian calendar in the year 1582. The new calendar changed New Year's day from March 25 to January 1. However people who refused to accept the change continued to celebrate New Year's as an eight-day festival that concluded with the exchange of gifts on April 1. According to folklore, these laggards were derided by their more progressive contemporaries, who called them "April Fools"
